David Acharya's hallmark investment in Impact XM offers a playbook on how independent sponsors can create massive value through patience and precision. Over a 9.5-year hold, the business underwent 8 strategic acquisitions and weathered the COVID shutdown, ultimately achieving a 13x growth in EBITDA. It was not just about growing EBITDA, it was also about making the company more durable, more strategic, and more attractive to the next buyer. Impact XM evolved from a regional player into a national experiential marketing platform, setting the stage for a successful exit.

David offered rare insight into how to split from partners when visions diverge. He described the dissolution of his previous firm AGI as amicable and professional. With mainly one portfolio company remaining at the time of the split, and clean legal documentation in place, they managed the transition smoothly. Another feather in the "flexibility" cap for the independent sponsor model.

David offered candid reflections on capital placement agents, noting that their effectiveness varies significantly across the independent sponsor landscape. In his experience, agents can be helpful in making introductions and providing structure, but they are not a substitute for trust built directly with capital partners. He cautioned that some agents overpromise or fail to appreciate the unique challenges of the deal-by-deal model. For David, the most reliable capital relationships are forged through direct dialogue, shared experience, and mutual respect. A good placement agent can accelerate a process, but the sponsor still needs to own the relationships and the credibility behind the deal.

Today, David channels his learnings into the Independent Sponsor Alliance (ISA), a quarterly gathering of 55 like-minded professionals. What started informally among peers has grown into a structured forum to share intel, vet capital partners, and learn from guest speakers.
